What is the best month to rent an appartment in New Zealand – from available options + cost point of view?

I will be looking for renting in Wellington CBD and the suburbs including Johnsonville, Tawa, Kilbirnie, New town, etc.
The best time is in December and early January while the students are away, you have less competition for available flats and can sometimes find a good deal. After about Jan 10 you may as well cue up behind everyone else. But flats/apts can start to come available in mid-November as the Uni year finishes then. Between 3rd Jan and 10th Jan is pretty good as is the period 1st Dec to 20th Dec
